CONNECTHEO
CONNECTHEO (Conservation Networks and contemporary theories) is a research centre dedicated to the study of conservation networks (history, dynamics, influence) and their role in the evolution of practices (documents, charters, codes, principles, methodology development...). It brings together researchers from different universities and/or institutions, with the objective of federating work on the theorization and reconceptualization of conservation-restoration.
The world is changing, and so are the objects that conservation is dealing with. Classical concepts, such as originality, authenticity, or integrity, must be revisited, revitalized, or complemented by other concepts.
Our reflection covers architecture as well as movable property, materiality as well as the intangible. It is open to contributions from other disciplines. Favouring exchanges, even disruptive ones, is indeed to perpetuate the movement that has given conservation its legitimacy; it is to manifest, in its capacity to question itself, its autonomy.

Research topics
- What does "theory » mean?
- Networks history
- Endogenous conservation as expression of cultural rights
The concept of cultural rights, detailed in the Fribourg document (1993), is often exploited in the field of cultural expression and creativity to promote inclusiveness and diversity. In the field of heritage, these rights provide a particularly effective lever for the appropriation of policies by the communities themselves. Conservation-restoration, by its anchorage in materiality, allows indeed through an "empowerment" of the source communities to give substance to these rights, and to develop, outside the existing conceptual and methodological moulds, an original endogenous approach. The project is being conducted in conjunction with our partners, including the Democratic Republic of Congo.
